How to Improve your Website Copy in Under 10 Minutes

Copywriting can be pretty mystifying, especially if you don’t consider yourself a “writer.”

Not to worry! Here’s a simple way that you can take your existing Website copy and make it infinitely better!

Usually, when a client comes to me, their pages look something like this:

I’m Sky Stover, and I’m a Web Designer and marketing consultant based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I help solo-entrepreneurs and small businesses position themselves as experts through Websites that are mobile-friendly and strategically designed. I’ll admit…when I started my first business, I really didn’t care about Internet marketing. I just wanted a Website that looked good and got me customers. I Just Wanted to Share My Passion With the World…I Didn’t Really Want to Become a “Marketer. The problem was…I was 14 years old when I started that business, so I couldn’t afford to hire someone to design my Website and do my marketing.

When I set out to do it by myself, I realized just how complicated the DIY tools where out there. Even the ones that were simple were extremely lacking in customizability and functionality. Luckily, being only 14, I had time on my side to dedicate to learning this stuff. So I spent years teaching myself and perfecting my Web design and internet marketing skills, and was able to achieve some pretty impressive results when I started a new business (as a magician!):

I was able to increase my prices 500% in the first year of business. (I still saw an increase in the amount of customers coming through my doors)

I was featured on the cover of one of my city’s top entertainment magazines and on numerous daytime TV programs.(“Free” marketing!)

Most importantly, I was doing what I loved and making a living doing it. (No “clocking in,” no “asking off.”)

I had the freedom to choose my own path, which allowed me to work on my own terms.

There’s nothing wrong with what’s written. In fact, this is the copy that is on my Website right now.

How to Improve your Website Copy to make it easier to read

Here’s the secret: Most people are skimmers.

Your average person is not going to read everything you write. That’s why we use emphasis by bolding, italicising, and underlining…as well as create headlines like the one above (How to improve your Website copy…)

Here’s the same copy, modified to include emphasis:

A lot easier to read and skim, huh?

The best tip I can give for writing and improving your own copy is to “pull out” our emphasize the most important parts of the page’s story. In other words…if someone just reads the emphasized parts, they should be able to get the entire story without reading anything else.

The body copy is just there to supply some details…but the meat of what people will be reading is in the headlines and what’s bolded/underlined.

This is just one tip for improving the copy on your Web pages, and it’s an easy one. I have 10 other tips for rating and improving your Website copy that I would love for you read and download. Just tell me where to send it and I’ll get it out to you!
